Major Motion Pictures to See This Winter

Sarah Jiva, Features Writer

With winter upon us, what better time is there to go see a new movie? Many interesting new movies are out right now or will be coming soon to a theater near you.

Critically Acclaimed: Lady Bird
This film has become Rotten Tomatoes’ best reviewed movie EVER. This coming-of-age dramedy revolves around an original teenage girl who is trying to make her own path in society. She navigates her way through typical teen struggles with her own style and personal flair. Also at the core of this story is the choppy relationship between the main character and her mother. Between the strong, authentic personalities of these two women and the struggles that they endure, you will surely be able to relate to some aspect of this popular film.

Heartwarming Family Film: Coco
Pixar’s latest masterpiece follows a young boy as he follows his dreams of becoming a musician. Throughout his journey, he experiences elements of his cultural history that help him to discover his family’s roots. This Pixar film is a must-see for any Disney aficionado.

Timeless Sci-Fi: Star Wars: The Last Jedi
This one is a no-brainer…If you are a Star Wars fan or you want to immerse yourself into the franchise, this movie is at the top of your list. You may have even seen it already, even though it just came out on December 15th. This latest movie in the franchise follows Luke Skywalker as he meets Rey, a new character who possesses abilities of the Force.

From the Page to the Big Screen: Wonder
There is a good chance that you read Wonder by Raquel Jaramillo in middle school. The movie based off of the children’s novel is an eye-opening film about a boy with facial differences and how those around him react to something that they know nothing about. It’s emphasis on the importance of friendship and kindness makes it an inspiring film for both children and adults alike.

Historically Captivating: The Post
With director Steven Spielberg and highly admired actors Meryl Streep and Tom Hanks, The Post is expected to be a very successful film. This thriller is based on the true story of the first female publisher of The Washington Post and the challenges that she faced during a very chaotic time in American history. She and an editor must decide if they should take it upon themselves to reveal the Pentagon Papers (which consisted of decades of government secrets regarding the Vietnam War) or if they should keep quiet and let the government continue to deceive the American public. Today, as trust in the government is relatively low, this true story is alive and relevant, despite the fact that it took place during a time that seems distant to our 2017. Not to mention, Meryl Streep’s portrayal of publisher Katharine Graham pays homage to all of the strong, brave women who broke the common mold and worked hard to better their nation.

As you can see, there a variety of different movies circulating in theaters this winter. Of course, there are many other worthy films to consider seeing as well, so check out your local movie theater website to see what is available and most accessible to you.
