The SHA Musical…Once on This Island!

Bridget Gedeon, Student Life

It’s musical season at SHA again, and this time it’s “Once on This Island”! Featuring Maddy Greene as the lead character Ti Moune, the cast and crew are putting on three shows from November 9-11. Evening performances on Friday and Saturday are at 7:00 P.M., and there is also a matinee performance on Sunday at 2:00 P.M. Set on the French Antilles archipelago in the Caribbean, “Once on This Island” follows peasant girl Ti Moune on her journey to find her place in her world and her pursuit of Daniel Beauxhomme, a wealthy young Frenchman who has captured her heart. She is aided in her quest by the goddesses Asaka (Gianna Monetti), Agwe (Olivia Zanelli), and Erzulie (Sarah Cody), and challenged by death demon Papa Ge (Nadia Sleiman). Through her journey, she is attempting to prove that love is stronger than the power of social prejudice and death. Some numbers include “We Dance,” “Mama Will Provide,” “Pray,” and “Rain” among others. The cast and crew have worked nonstop since the second week of school learning vocal parts, choreography, blocking, and other behind-the-scenes aspects to put together the show. If you’ve been curious about the giant palm tree in the aud, how we can pull off a show with only five boys, or why there’s a musical number about a mango, then come and view the show! Tickets are $10 for students and seniors and $12 for adults. Hope to see you there!
